HOW ARE YOU?

Happy August! It is unbelievable that the Crew of 2011 is into Year #2. John and I find it amazing that our lives move forward as does Wills. John was "advised" to retire this year which forced us to visit a neighborhood establishment and start the process of what we wanted to do with the rest of our lives. He made the decision to have an elective amputation secondary to a 30 year old injury - which we did in April after a wonderful trip to Northern California. John became remarkably competent in a wheelchair - I had emergency surgery for a "twisted bowel" - I recovered - John got a prosthesis and dons it daily to walk anywhere he has ever walked at twice the speed! Life goes on...John has started a Welcome Home Inc. - house sitting business = I remain at the university. And we both hope to go to Italy to rendezvous with Will in April.

We continue to keep the Crew of 2011 on the top of our prayer list and remain grateful for the lessons that come from their good work. How are You?

Warmest regards,

Patty and John

  1. Wow. I just popped by for a visit and see that you have been through a lot. It is good to hear that you two have both recovered from big surgeries, and that your son is still in Niger.

Jessica, who returned last December, speaks with people from her village on a weekly basis. She has just begun grad school in International Nutrition, her next big step post-Peace Corps.

  3. I'm glad both of you are doing well as well as Will. And yes, stanacard has been a blessing. I will be going to see Brian in 4 weeks - arriving Oct 28th for almost 3 weeks. We'll spend 2 weeks in Egypt and then 5 days in Niger.

If anyone has anything they would like me to bring to Niger for your child, just contact me at regnitk@gmail.com and we can arrange for you to get it to me before I go.

I look forward to meeting some of your children. Karen

  4. This morning we got an email from Thomas that began:

So, I am in Niamey right due to the passing of new volunteer Stephanie Chance - the memorial service is in three hours. Not sure if you've
heard the news yet. She sworn a couple weeks ago and was one of the trainees I VATed the two weeks prior to swear-in. She was posted in
Zinder city and was a MCD volunteer. I will link the article from the PC website.

The link Thomas sent was this:

Please add this crew of 2012 to your prayer list. Later on Thomas added this comment, ...in general it's been a tough time for this new stage already, this just adds on to it. The Zinder region also has had a couple other med issues at the same time, so they are particulary hurting.

  5. Katie was home visiting in Montana when the news of the death of Stephanie Chance came out. She was very strongly affected as the PCV's in Niger are such a close group. I agree that we need to keep this group close to heart as well as Stephanie's family.
